The organic dairy farming in France

The organic dairy farming in certain European countries

In France

In 1998, around 15000 dairy cows produced 55 million litres organic milk. It was from that time that subsidies to convert farmes to organic were increased, plus a premium was allocated by some dairy industries.

From 1998 to 2002, the organic milk collectio quadrupled from 55 million to 198 million litres. At that time, imports still represented around a quarter of the national production.

In 2006, the financial measures and organic premiums dropped, so the number of breeders converting their land decreased.

In 2005, collection went from 228.7 million (in 2004) to 223.4 million litres (in 2005) ,that is to say a drop of 2.4% for a national herd of 66000 dairy cows.

In 2005, the collection of organic milk represented 1% of the total french collection.

Since 2002, bottled mik has represented an impotant part of processed organic dairy products.( up to 80% in 2004)

In 2005, liquid milk remained stable, whilst yoghourts and desserts increased ( +6.5% ). Cheese processing slightly increased . However, it would seem that butter increased ( +12.6% ).
In 2006, the upward trend of processed organic products was confirmed with +15% and +7% on fresh products and butter respectively.

Regarding consumption, one can see a significant increase in the ferst half-year 2006, around +28% of the total dairy products mentioned above.
